ADHD in Adults: Understanding, Assessment, and Support

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is often associated with childhood, but many adults live with undiagnosed ADHD, facing challenges in focus, organisation, and emotional regulation.

Many of my clients come to me feeling frustrated and overwhelmed, asking, "Why do I struggle with things that seem so easy for everyone else?" They wonder if something is wrong with them, questioning why everyday tasks feel harder than they should.

If this resonates with you, you’re not alone. These feelings are incredibly common for people with ADHD—but they don’t mean there’s anything wrong with you. Understanding your brain and how it works can be the first step toward self-acceptance, clarity, and the right support to help you thrive.

If you’ve ever felt like you struggle more than others with day-to-day tasks, time management, or impulsivity, an ADHD assessment could provide the clarity you need.

Why Get a Formal ADHD Assessment?

A formal ADHD assessment can be life-changing. Understanding your diagnosis allows you to access the right support, develop effective coping strategies, and make informed decisions about your personal and professional life. Whether you're struggling with work, relationships, or self-esteem, getting the right diagnosis can open doors to meaningful support.

Support Options Available

Once diagnosed, there are several support options available, including:

  • Therapeutic Interventions – Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) can help you manage ADHD symptoms, develop better routines, and improve emotional regulation.

  • Medication – Some individuals benefit from medication, which can enhance focus and reduce impulsivity. The formal diagnosis can open up access to medication.

  • Workplace & Educational Support – Employers and educational institutions often provide accommodations to help you succeed if you can provide a formal report.

Many people decide to take medication and have CBT for ADHD. Equally, many people do not want the medication and use the diagnosis to get the help they need at their work/educational setting and prefer to try CBT first. Your treatment options are discussed and we collaboratively determine the right course of treatment for you as no two people present the same.

What to Expect from an ADHD Assessment

Getting a formal ADHD diagnosis is a structured yet supportive process. We start by arranging two to three appointments, each lasting 1 to 1.5 hours. These sessions allow us to gather the necessary information to understand your experiences and determine whether an ADHD diagnosis is appropriate.

You'll also be asked to complete some questionnaires, which help reinforce the assessment. If possible, input from a parent, sibling, or someone who knows you well can be valuable, but it’s not essential—your experience is what matters most.

Your Diagnosis & Support Options

Following your assessment, you’ll receive a detailed report outlining your formal diagnosis, along with recommendations for support. This report can be shared with your employer or educational setting to help you access the accommodations and resources you may need.

Our goal is to provide clarity, validation, and practical next steps so you can move forward with confidence.
